Now, this BLOG is for Geeks, Nerds or whatever Linux lovers are called.
I needed a fileserver for my personal files (Yes, in holland it is legal to download movies). So the choice I had to make was whether I should buy an existing NAS (Netgear, Iomega etc.) or to build one myself.
Eventually I decided to buy HP’s Proliant N36L Microserver. A small server with an AMD Athlon II Neo CPU in it. The casing can hold 4 Harddrives of 2 TB each.
As an OS I decided to install CentOS 5.6. I use Centos because I am very familiar with that Linux Distribution. I installed CentOS on a USB-stick which I placed in the Internal USB slot of the Proliant server. So far, nothing very special. But now comes the most advanced part: The File system.
EXT 2/3 is a very good Linux file system. But I wanted a more advanced Filesystem. Especially because I want to easily add more hard drives in the near future.
ZFS seemed the best solution for my wish. ZFS is a Filesystem which was founded by SUN. ZFS is not based on partitions, but on a Storagepool. Every storage pool can consist of multiple VDevs. A vdev can be a physical hard drive.
So, if I add another 2TB harddrive in the future, I can simply add it to my pool and my storage grows with 2TB without resizing partitions.
Oh and by the way, The limit of ZFS is 1 Zettabyte. (Comparison: All the internet traffic in 2010 was a quarter Zettabyte.)
For the second time, I went to Webhostingday. An annual 3 day event organized in
Yesterday I had a few appointments in the centre of Amsterdam. Afterwards I had to pick up some people at Schiphol airport. But there was a gap from 2 hours between my appointments and the landing of the airplane. So I went to Starbuck’s at Schiphol plaza. It was not very busy. So I ordered a coffee, settled down, took my laptop and I had a very efficient 2 hours.
I went to Freiburg im Breisgau for work (it is in the very south of Germany). Really I could advice you that because Freiburg really is a very nice city. It is a real student city.
