Do you see that big red bridge on top of your screen? Well, that is the Golden Gate Bridge.. Okay, so what’s so exciting about it? The Golden Gate bridges is situated in San Fransisco (USA for the geographical noobs). The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Fransisco to Marin County. Marin County is a county located in the North San Fransisco Bay Area of the U.S state of California. Marin County is famous for its stunning natural beauty, liberal politics and pockets of affluence. It is the number one county in the nation for per capita income. A lot of software/hardware companies are located in Marin County, this is because of the fact that Marin County is located near “Sillicon Valley“
Okay, perhaps I have to tell something about me, myself and I.. Well, I am Marin Heideman, I live in Nieuwegein, which is a small town near Utrecht in The Netherlands. I am owner of a company called DigiState Automatiseringsdiensten, a small Webhosting/IT company(guess where this blog is hosted
). And I am a fulltime student (according to my university) at the Hogeschool Utrecht, I study Business Informatics.
Well, I think that’s enough for now
If you prefer to know more about me… you know how to find me.
Hello and welcome to my personal weblog. May I guess what your tihinking? You are thinking “why the F*CK does marin have a weblog?” Well, because everyone has one nowadays, so why not me?
Okay, i have to admit, i am not really a writer, but I shall try to post something interesting now and then.
On this page, I am going to tell something about the way DigiState has been found.
I started with some simple websites about myself, the websites were hosted by HCCNet, my old webhosting provider. Those sites were boring and without any clue. Once, I had developed a site with the name “Heideman Internet Services” Too bad, but the site never made it to the internet, all because a lack of time.
On a good sunny morning (or was it a rainy day?) I started to play a bit with Swish (a simple version of Flash) With Swish, I made a goodlooking Flash intro for my website at HCCNET’s. The name “Marinsoft” was used for the first time in this intro.
June 2002- Someone gave me a second-hand PC, I installed Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft IIS. I requested an internet adress from no-ip.com. My first internet adress was “http://marinsoft.servehttp.com” It worked… but not for long. Someone hacked my server and I had to start over again.. It Worked again… but not for long either, my server was infected by a virus. When I decided to stop my big Marinsoft Plans, someone gave me the idea of trying Apache instead of IIS. So I installed Apache for Windows.
HALF Webtools was very interested in the webspace on my server. But he could only use space with some FTP access, so I installed Bulletproof FTP Server.
We thought that is was a nice idea to keep the score of our web visitors, so half wrote a little Windows programm called “HITS” This tool scanned the Apache Access Logfile ad generated a picture (the web counter) The only problem: This program used a hing amount of memory
After a while, HALF and I decided that we needed a guestbook. We used tboek, but tboek was a bit to commercial, so why not develop one ourselves? HALF was writing the guestbook in PERL, while I was busy preparing the server for PERL.
Everythng worked well, Perl came instead of HITS and took over the webcounter.
December-2003 I decided that “marinsoft.servehttp.com” was a bit to difficult, so I registered the name “Marinsoft.nl”
January-2004 Someone gave me another second-hand PC, so I made a second server. Now I had to give the servers good names. The first one was called “Enterprise”and the second one was called “Voyager”.
After a while, I wondered how a server would operate under the Linux OS, so i took my dad’s pc and made it my testmachine. It worked well, and I transformed the Enterprise to a Redhat Linux Machine.
We used Kerio Mailserver for Windows, in 2006 I installed Postfix and Courier with SQL Backend. This was far more stable then Kerio.
October 2006- I decided to buy a professional 19″ Rackserver, installed it with Gentoo linux and the Challenger was born. I put the challenger in a datacentre, and my dream has come true… professional hosting…
january 2nd, the day that I went to the chamber of commerce… the name of the company is DigiState Automatiseringsdiensten, because the name is more commercial than Marinsoft. I think Marinsoft reminds you of another pretty big software company doesn’t it?
Well, so far for now.. We have a lot of FuturePlans ofcourse… I will inform you asap
The Internet is the first medium that allows anyone with reasonably inexpensive equipment to publish to a wide audience. It is the first medium that distributes information globally at almost no marginal cost. – Bill Gates
